Over 5,000 Wendy's restaurants around the world serve the hamburger with the square patty that hangs over the edge of the bun. It's the burger that inspired the 1984 award-winning ad campaign with a little old lady crying out, "Where's the beef?" This secret recipe to create a lower-fat clone of the famous burger asks the question, "Where's the fat?" By using super-lean ground beef, fat-free mayonnaise, and fat-free cheese, we have cut the fat to less than half of what is in the original. Now you can have two cloned burgers for less than the fat found in one original.

Get This

_main
  • 1 plain hamburger bun
  • 1/4-pound lean ground beef (7% fat)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ketchup
  • 1/2 tablespoon fat-free mayonnaise
  • 1 slice fat-free American cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 iceberg lettuce leaf
  • 2 to 3 separated onion slices
  • 1 large tomato slice
  • 3 dill pickle slices
Do This

1. Brown the faces of the bun in a large saute pan or a griddle over medium heat. Keep the pan hot.

2. On wax paper, shape the ground beef into an approximately 4x4-inch square. You may find it easier to freeze the patty ahead of time, so that it doesn't fall apart when cooking. Don't defrost.

3. Cook the burger in the pan for 3 to 5 minutes per side, or until done. Salt and pepper both sides during the cooking.

4. Spread the ketchup and the mayonnaise on the top bun.

5. Put the cooked patty on the bottom bun. Lay the slice of cheese on top of the meat.

6. Spread the mustard on the cheese, then stack on the lettuce, onion, tomato, and pickles, in that order.

7. Complete the sandwich with the top bun and microwave the whole thing for 15 to 20 seconds to warm it up.
