Ratings and Reviews of Portillo's Famous Chocolate Cake

I made this for my daughter's birthday. It is so rich but so very good. I used part black cocoa and cut the levening in half because we are at 5400 ft and high altitude affects the rise. The cakes turned out perfect. I cut half of it up and froze it. The rest we enjoyed fresh. It froze very well and it has been nice to have slices of cake we can pull out of the freezer to enjoy. I'll be making it again, but probably with half the frosting or sometimes without. The cake is excellent on its own.

I love this recipe, which tastes like the original. However, I love SIMPLE, too. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we had the easy recipe, which includes the simple box cake mix and off the shelf frosting? (Hint! Hint, Todd!)

Fantastic recipe. Identical to Portillo's chocolate cake. The cake is ridiculously moist and rich.

My daughter-in-law is from Chicago. She and my son currently live in Montana but whenever they come to Phoenix, Portillo’s is the first stop they make when they land. They are moving to Arizona in a few weeks. When I saw this recipe for Portillo’s chocolate cake I had to try it. The cake was delicious. Super moist and flavorful. I did have to refrigerate the frosting for a few hours to get it to the right consistency to frost. By morning the frosting had softened but so delicious. To be honest, I have never eaten the cake from Portillo’s but my friend informed that it was exactly like their cake. Everyone who tried it said it was delicious. I will be making it again and can’t wait to take it to my daughter-in-law and her parent’s when they arrive. I highly recommend this recipe for a delicious chocolate cake.
