McDonald's Special Sauce (Big Mac Sauce)

A big part of the Big Mac's appeal is the tasty "secret" spread slathered onto both decks of the world's most popular double-decker hamburger. So what's so special about this sauce? It's basically just thousand island dressing, right? Pretty much. But this sauce has a bit more sweet pickle relish in it than a typical thousand island salad slather. Also, I found that this clone comes close to the original with the inclusion of French dressing. It's an important ingredient—ketchup just wont do it. That, along with a sweet-and-sour flavor combo from vinegar and sugar, makes this sauce go well on any of your home burger creations, whether they're Big Mac clones or not.

1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons French dressing
4 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
1 tablespoon finely minced white onion
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt

1. Combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl. Stir well.

2. Place the sauce in a covered container and refrigerate for several hours, or overnight, so that the flavors blend. Stir the sauce a couple of times as it chills.

Makes about 3/4 cup.

Soooo delicious!

This is better than the actual special sauce. My family and I tried it and absolutely loved it. Even though the McDonald's website states other ingredients, like mayo and yellow mustard, I will stick with this one.

This is so delicious! I used my homemade relish in the recipe. These homemade big macs are better than the ones at McDonald's!!
The Bomb!

Really t'was the best sauce i've ever had, it may be even better the the actual "secret sauce"!

I made this sauce twice,a day ahead. It taste great. We grilled some Kobe burgers on our stove top grill. My family love it. I can not wait to make this for a annual Memoral Day BBQ we are attending out of state.

The longer it sits the better it gets. haven't made this in a good while and I couldn't remember if it had vinegar in it, so I looked up the recipe, and to my surprise this is the exact same one I've used for years. Nice job !
Could not tell the difference!
Submitted on: 08/06/16
I made this sauce and used it on a burger the same night, but it really does taste better the next day! Worth the tears from chopping those onions so small. I'll never buy another Big Mac!

Awesome, best "Big Mac" I've had in years. Tweaked it a little added another Tbsp of French Dressing and used onion flakes. Will definitely be making again
Highly recommended

Great recipe and multi-use condiment that is easy/quick to make. Even can be a salad dressing.

No longer have to get xtra Mac sauce at Mickey D's can keep this in the fridge because they sure don't wanna put xtra on burgers and none on the side.
So Delicious!!
Submitted on: 10/29/15
I used vegenaise and an extra tsp of relish, and oh my goodness, was it ever delicious!
Submitted on: 08/22/15
Very good

Awesome spread. Perhaps one little ingredient missing (according to my recollection of the Big Mac from years ago)... a dash or two of white pepper.

Found actual list of McD's ingredients on their web site under nutrition & Ingredients, Yours is better and healthier !
Submitted on: 07/21/15
It's almost an exact duplicate. After mixing it up, I have found that putting it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds and remixing, and then chilling helps a little. It mixes easier while slightly enhancing the taste and improves the texture to a more creamy consistency.

Excellent sauce, always keep some in my fridge!
Tastes & smells like the real thing!

Followed recipe nearly as written - used Veganaise, and Catalina dressing (which I think is the same as French?). As soon as I added the diced onion, WOW I got a whiff of "Big Mac" immediately. At first I was going to leave out the sugar, because I usually prefer recipes without sugar. But I tasted it without, it tasted good but not quite right. So I took a chance and added the sugar and bam, there it was, Big Mac Sauce in all its glory. Tastes exactly as I remember.
Loving it

Amazing ! I added one more teaspoon of pickle relish and it tasted amazing ! Just like McDonalds ! Didn't even taste bad after 20 minutes. The next day was super awesome.
Submitted on: 06/06/15
Maybe it's because I am pregnant and I am super craving big mac sauce, but it was OK. It tasted more like dressing than anything else. Everyone else really liked it though. It was good, just not what I've wanted.

We don't eat at McDonald's anymore, after that video of chicken McNugget was on YouTube, yea it's nasty! Since we will never eat there again, I always loved Big Macs, I tried this sauce and wow! Very surprised it taste just like it! Couldn't tell the difference between the 2! Excellent!
Perfect for Big Mac Pizza!
Submitted on: 04/18/15
I used this sauce instead of pizza sauce, topped with burger and cheese then a sprinkle if shredded iceberg when it came out of the oven. One of my family's favorites!
Submitted on: 04/11/15
Instead of white vinegar you can try Apple vinegar and instead of sweet relish try minced regular pickles to get a closer match to the original stuff
Submitted on: 03/23/15
Amazing taste, I added just a little hot chili sauce to add some spicyness and its perfect!

The burgers made with this sauce taste nearly identical to the Big Mac (their bread is sweeter). The sauce gets better after melding for a few days so make it ahead of time or make extra that you can store in your refrigerator for the next time you crave a Big Mac.

i didnt expect it to be this good, tastes just like big mac sauce!
Submitted on: 10/29/14
The key is letting this sit overnight as, if you don't it is too relishy. After one day, it is BETTER than the original.
Submitted on: 09/29/14
Perf, just perf!
Submitted on: 08/02/14
It taste just like it, I used it with all the ingredients. But i used ketchup instead of french dressing. Thank God I found this, now I can make my own burgers with mac sauce.
vegan version
Submitted on: 07/18/14
This is so good! I didnt have any french dressing so I substituted ketchup. Also since I'm vegan I didn't use regular mayo, I used vegenaise instead and I used dill relish instead of sweet. Truly amazing!!! My Boca burger never tasted better! Mmmm!
I looooooove it

Used the exact measurements but used creamy French dressing. Tasted like Big Mac sauce but lighter and more fluffy. Waiting for it to sit to put on my burgers for dinner tonight. Excited for that action.

Super close
Submitted on: 12/10/13
Very close but once I ate a big Mac and the sauce tasted like malt vinegar, and I'm almost positive that's what was used in the original but good job!
Not bad at all
Submitted on: 11/20/13
Wasn't perfect, but I should note that I didn't have regular french dressing, just the creamy orange country french, so I used that instead. I'm not a fan of vinegar, so I left that out. Otherwise it came out pretty good, much better than other mock Mac sauces that I've tried.

Big Mac Sauce
Submitted on: 08/31/13
Close, but the actual sauce from McD has mustard powder and turmeric in it. Also, they use paprika, onion powder and garlic powder in the recipe. I've also found that dill relish rather than sweet relish gives a closer taste to the real thing. At least you didn't say "Thousand Island Dressing" which everyone wants to say tastes "just like the Secret Sauce". I don't know if they have a terrible memory or if they have poor tastebuds, but Thousand Island tastes NOTHING like

Amazing! Added a bit of ketchup as didn't have any French dressing but worked really well, now I can have a healthier home made version of the Big Mac, nice. (It's their buns that contain all the really bad stuff!)

This sauce is an exact clone I put it on everything. I've found myself waking up in the middle of the night and eating spoonfulls of sauce, not good I know. How many calories in this sauce by the way? how many calories specifically in 1 tablespoon

After being placed on cholesterol meds I've been looking for ways to enjoy soy burgers. This sauce with the "All American flame grilled" Boca burger (which tastes like a Burger King patty) is amazing! It's a cholesterol-free, meatless Big MAC that is around 400 calories. Even with only 1 patty it is fantastic and knocks it down to under 300 calories.

I added a 1/2 a TBSP more White onion, one TSP of Ketchup and one tsp more Sweet Pickled Relish! Felt that made it perfect! Went to McDonalds & bought a Big mac and asked for more Special sauce on it! Compared it to this recipe, plus what i added, made it just like McDonalds Special sauce! Thanks!!

used this for a few years and misplaced my original copy. Glad to find it again...especially good on portobello mushroom burgers...use the mushroom as the burger(grill w/steak sauce and seasoning in the cap)
Submitted on: 06/06/06
It's good! but it can be better. Instead of using fresh onion, use dehydrated onion and rehydrate it in warm water. Turns a nine into a ten!! Enjoy.
